Meet Jennet Liaw

Designer for Nike, Jennet currently runs her own company as an artist that is an independent. Jennet has worked with companies including Adidas, Puma, REI, Harper Collins, Netflix, Airbnb, and Apple. In our chat, Jennet speaks about her reconnection with her Taiwanese heritage, her ethnicity as an Asian-American from her early years  as well as the ways that callingigraphy prompted her to create an obsession with icons that never ceases.

What word do you think you have chosen? What do you think is the meaning of the people we work with? Explain the significance that lies behind it?

I decided to use my personal word"yuan" (Yuan ) which is very ethereal in terms of how it could be employed in conversation. Instead of saying someone is "in your life due to particular circumstances" in Mandarin you might say "you both both"yuan." The meaning behind the word can be broad in it's an ordinary connection between lovers and friends who meet due to situations that led two people that aren't related to one another to be seated right next to each other in the L train. The relationships of all kinds can be classified as"yuan..

I picked this word since it speaks to me about the limits of our existence relative to the happenings in random ways that create us as an integral part of all the people in the world. It's amazing that words is able to remind us of the universe mainly due to the luck of the draw.

We'd love to know more about the artwork that you've created. What inspired you to convey your message in the style that you've decided to do?

The most fundamental Chinese words are filled with the complexity of words since not only are they composed of compound words (a random example would be the term used"circus" actually an abbreviation of "circus" it is an abbreviation of "horse-show-group") Each character is comprised of meaningful symbols, which communicate with one another. It is therefore natural to think of them as sprites sporting strokes that are eager to communicate with each other, and to discover the yuan, which linked to form the word. It's quite Meta.

What influence have your origins had on your wear your clothes and the way you think?

Though I was brought up trilingual, that's not an excuse to not be able to write or read Chinese. However, I know the fact that my Taiwanese grandparents taught me to calligraphy at an early stage of my existence. The importance of these words remain a source of inspiration with icons, and in general my background in calligraphy has allowed me to remain steadfast in an idea that meaning may be inherent in every object.

What are the ways we can as a species be able to acknowledge the contributions to art made by API creators and artists this month?

It seems like a lot of API artists who are working in the States do not have the advantage of making use of their heritage to develop their skills. The 'assimilation' of the past was an integral element of the lives of most students during their early years as they ascended towards the high rungs of the ladder.

Anyone who comes across me could think that I can write in yuan Chinese or use the word quickly however it's not the case. I was given the task of researching the definitions on Wikipedia and my mother which I am grateful for the chance to find the definitions.

API is a method that allows API creators with the chance to engage with the world at large to show their distinct cultural identity. With whatever method they can, they're able to get reconnect with the roots they've forgotten and allow their participation to become a contributor to the growing community of innovation that's to come.
