Artist Vlog - Riso Chan

Riso Chan about embracing her authentic self in her art work:

My work is extremely emotional. I create portraits of myself which depict the emotions I am feeling. I have always been a sensitive person. When I was young, it has been something that always felt a bit uneasy and I attempted to put it down. (...) As you grow, you realise that actually it's alright and everyone feels differently. I decided to make use of all the emotional energy I have to my daily life and start painting. It is a way to boost my creative juices and generate the imagination of others. It's amazing that what I've been trying to push down for all of my life, all of a sudden, I put on a piece of paper and seemed like a great release. There is finally the possibility to make use of this sense, where I can utilize these feelings as well as joys, sorrows and feelings to put them down on paper. It felt really awesome and took me back to my place of gratefulness. It started resonating with a number of others too. I began to open the door and writing things down on paper I'd never thought of prior to. Instead of trying to be the same as other artists who have already "made it" I listened on what I would like to convey and who I am as a person. I took on something that I was not happy with about myself and I realised it is actually my superpower. I'm very happy to be my true sensitive self.
