Control over Community-related notifications both for you and your fellow members

Jul 6, 2022

We've updated community notification settings to improve the user experience (and less email messages). Here's what's new.

What's the right way to let members know what's happening within your local community?

It is important to inform your users know about interesting conversations , and get them involved with more conversations -- but you also have to allow your members the ability to control their experience and limit the amount of notifications they receive. We also learned from our founders about how crucial it is to find this delicate balance.

The latest version of the community feature, you and your members get more control over messages. This means more lively discussion, no more overflowing inboxes, and a community platform that can bring you and your audience closer to each other.

Set your own notifications preferences as a creator member

Creators and community members can now choose which notifications they'd like to get for each topic: New posts and responses to your comments and/or new responses to your posts.

When you log into a community as a member Go to Settings, then click on "Edit" in the Notifications. (Creators will find this option in the Notifications tab in your Account's settings.)

There are a variety of community topics you follow. You can simply check or uncheck boxes to choose the types of alerts you'd like to receive for each subject.

For example, you might want to receive notifications for posts, comments, and responses in an area that is time-sensitive like live Events or Announcements. In other areas, you may want to be only notified each time someone posts the post, or turn off notification for the topic completely.

You may also toggle your notifications off or on using the buttons "Mute All" or "Unmute the entire".

In addition, you can change your per-topic notification settings quickly from the "All topics"page or on an individual page for each topic. Select the bell icon after which you can set your preferences for notifications.

Set default notifications for a topic

Creators can also set the default notifications settings for every subject in the community. This gives you greater control over how members experience.

Instead of sending notifications to members of your organization for each article in each topic it is possible to choose the subjects your members are notified about and the kinds of notifications they get.

Here's how:

On the Community tab of your dashboard, select "All subjects". Then, click the "..." next topic you'd like to edit and select "Edit Topic". From there, choose your notification settings under "Default notification settings".

Members are able to change their setting of notifications at any time for their accounts. If they haven't modified their settings, they will default to the settings that were set by the author of every topic.

We're hoping these updates to the community create a better experience for both you and your fellow members. We appreciate your time!
