Custom-designed and frequently hand-crafted top hats, masks butterflies, crowns painting backdrops macro techniques to capture details, inspired by old noir films from the 1940s and 1930s. A lot of time and deliberation go into every photo of fine art by the gifted Italian photographer Giulia Valente.

We have asked Giulia about what the secret of creating her artful photography was. Here's her account.

"I completed my degree from Padua University in disciplines of Music, Art, and Theatre in 2006. I've always been fascinated by art: one of the things that I enjoy about living in Italy is the fact that art is everywhere. It's simple to get inspired.

My style is called fine art photography. I am able to see the continuity between painting and photography. In many ways photography is like painting's younger sibling. Photographs, not just paintings is my primary source of inspiration when planning to shoot-retouch-and-retouch a new project."

"Giovanni Gastel, the recent deceased Italian photographer once stated that you have to trash 10 000 good ideas before getting the right one. In my own small way to implement this method. In fact, I have many ideas in my journal sketch notes, notes and ideas that will likely to be kept on paper for the rest of my life.

The most important step when creating a new idea is planning. It is crucial to take decisions that define the main idea. Then, make drawings, collect objects/props... This can be an extremely difficult and lengthy process because photography of this type requires a lot of attention and even an obsession with the fine details, the things you don't immediately take notice of, but which can make all the impact."

What were the keys in making the caterpillar photos?

"In the situation that I was working on for the Caterpillar project, I attempted to determine the characteristics which identify the character which make him easily identifiable. These include the color blue, the hookah that he smokes, the wings when he turns into a butterfly. But as well the manner of speaking - which is perhaps a little conceited and careless. In the end, I wanted to connect the various elements together, combining them with the style and look of the picture I was thinking of.

In May of 2021, an exhibit of some of my work was inaugurated at the Laboratorio Cardin(Padua, Italy). It is a great feeling and grateful as this is my first time exhibiting."

A selection of her beautiful art photography, that are that are rooted in Italian and Flemish painting of the The XV and XVI century, are available the images on Instagram and her Website.
