Mar 20, 2024

Every year, on the 8th of March the entire world comes together to celebrate International Women's Day (IWD). This day is a time to celebrate the remarkable achievements of women, to reflect on their challenges and to pledge our commitment to build a world in which equality is an everyday thing. We know that it isn't an event that changed in a flash. It's the culmination of years of struggle, determination and indomitable determination. We celebrate this day with everyone, and we encourage all of participants to begin a fascinating trip through the rich history of IWD as an example of the effectiveness of a group effort.

From Seeds of Change to a Global Movement

The seeds of IWD began to germinate during the early part of 20th century. That was when women's rights began to gain momentum. On the 8th of March 1857, employees from the textile industry gathered in protest at the poor working conditions as well as the lack of rights for women in the field of textiles. This strike called for shorter working hours, as well as a the payment of a fair and reasonable living wages. In the years following, on March 8, a march organized by women who worked in the needle trades took place to protest against child labor and working conditions in sweatshops, as well as demand women's rights to vote. In 1910, two years after the march, this date was changed to the March 8th, which was later recognized in the United Nations as International Women's Day.

Catalyst to Change

The 20th century saw IWD was a major influencer in bringing about positive changes. It served as a platform that enabled women to discuss issues of access to voting rights, fair work conditions and wages, and the right to access education. In 1975, IWD was recognized in the United Nations. IWD was acknowledged as a legitimate organization through the United Nations officially recognized IWD and acknowledged its value throughout the world. But, IWD isn't just about being a party, it's also an opportunity to take action. It's a time to be reminded that the battle to ensure equality for women and girls is still on the verge of being solved.
