Starting with Seeds of Change to a global Movement

The seeds of IWD were sown at the beginning of the 20th century, a time when the fight for women's rights was gaining momentum. On March 8, 1857, women workers marched in protest of inadequate working conditions, as well as subpar protections for women within their trade of clothing. The strike demanded the reduction of working hours as well as fair and reasonable living wage. In 1908, on March 8th, a march by women working in the needle trades was organized in protest of child labor, sweatshop working conditions, and to demand that women be able to vote. In 1910, two years after the march, March 8th became annually recognized in the year of International Women's Day.

The Catalyst to Change

It became a platform for women to raise their voice on topics such as voting rights, fair working conditions, pay and the right to access education. In 1975 IWD was recognized by IWD received recognition from the United Nations officially recognized IWD, solidifying its global significance.
