Five steps for creating an effective sales funnel for a membership website

1. Find your ideal member

However beautiful your sales funnel is, it's not going perform the task it's meant to do if it's not clear who it's for. Do not try to spray-and-pray with your funnel. Get clear on who your Ideal Member is!

If we're talking about the ideal type of member to use on a website for membership, we're really talking about the individual who requires it the most, the one who is looking to embark on a transformational journey together with you.

Here are a few questions to ask to clarify who you think your ideal Member is:

  • Who specifically will benefit by the change or the experience the service you're offering? (Get specific. What is their age? Which city do they reside in? Which websites do they frequent? Which YouTubers do they follow? )
  • What expertise do you (or the Community Host) have that you want to contribute to the site for members? (Your expertise? Your unique story or perspective? )
  • What issues are they having trouble with?
  • What amount would they pay for the transformation the membership site will provide them?

Don't just guess! You can talk to 10-15 Ideal Members and determine whether your beliefs regarding them are true. You can ask them some of the questions above.

Once you've finished Once you've done that, you can turn it into what we call the Large Purpose Statement. The format is as follows:

Big Purpose- New Image

These are some of the most fundamental rules of Community Design(tm)  And if you complete this first, there's a much higher chance your funnel will work.

*Psst. There is no cost training available in both finding your ideal Member AND defining your Big Goal in our Mighty Community. Did we mention it's cost-free? *

2. Find out the source of your customer

Before you start building your funnel, you must determine where your traffic is expected to come from. If there's already an audience there's a chance that it will be drawn from several different locations: an existing email list or social media following. These are your hot prospects. They already know you and what you're about. There is no reason not to build an email funnel to existing customers when you have them.

Most people need to look elsewhere in order to bring enough people into their funnel to convert. The majority of the time buying customers, this means advertising. Paid advertising has a few advantages, one of which is that many platforms allow you to target your Ideal Member.

As an example, say you were planning to develop an online membership site for Millennial bird watchers. You can refine your target users for your ads based on the age range, geographic location and gender (if you wish). You can then refine your target audience by interests, for instance people who enjoy bird watching, or those who have the same pages or have an the influencers who talk about birds.

Targeting allows you to select individuals who would be good prospects - you can make certain that they are actually people who like birdwatching instead of searching the web to locate the most elusive birdwatchers.

If you've never worked with ads prior to, it may be a bit intimidating. This is why we've put together a few basic tips:

  • Pick one of the traffic sources. Do not try to master YouTube, Facebook, LinkedIn as well as TikTok all at once. Select one of them and begin to use it well. There's a lot of potential users on any of these sites to launch your membership community.
  • There is no guarantee that it will work. Funnels are based on experimentation and research. If you test one advertisement but no one buys it but it's not a reason to have to give up. Try something else!
  • Don't overspend! The goal is to get to the point where you spend less money on advertisements to gain the customer that you gain profit from the customer. (Some platforms can give you an estimate of the lifetime value of a customer who is a member and you are able to use it to determine the amount you spend on ads. It is possible to find useful data in Mighty Analytics and also in your Stripe account. )

3. Pick an appropriate funnel

There are a bunch of different funnel styles. Which one is right for you may be dependent on your needs! Below, we'll offer a few recommendations in the following paragraphs. Remember, most funnel-creation programs will provide guidelines and might even offer an example to use. (ClickFunnels is a great example of a cool funnel application that comes with a lot of templates to build using. )

a. Squeeze Funnel (AKA Opt-in)

One of the most basic kinds of funnels that you need to be aware of is known as a Squeeze Page Also known as a Lead Magnet or Opt-in. The terms used in marketing are basically elaborate ways to say "trade an item for email address ."

If you have your ideal Person in mind, then it's likely that you can come up with a goodie that they'd be thrilled to receive. Below are some suggestions:

If you've been on the internet then you've probably seen these. The funnel concept is simple. You want 1. A super duper valuable thing which people are willing to exchange their email address in exchange for and 2. A THANK YOU page.

This funnel need to get running ASAP. If you're not quite ready to sell yet it's not too late to start producing leads!

b. Webinar Funnel

Another great funnel for selling the community's services is an online funnel. The webinar funnel is amazing because it does three things simultaneously: 1. Identify the issue people face and 2. You are positioned as the best person to fix it, and 3. Provides value (even in the event that they do not purchase). The reason webinars work is due to the fact that viewers can immediately see the person they are watching and judge if it's the person they would like to collaborate with.

Usually, a webinar funnel has 4 components:

  1. A registration page
  2. Thank you pages
  3. A hyperlink or invitation to participate in to the live webinar (it's also possible to skip the thank-you page and just go into the webcast)
  4. An opportunity to offer

c. Product Funnel

In the end, it's possible to use a simple sales and product funnel when selling your membership site. This can work especially well if you're reaching out to hot leads who are already in your email list and are familiar with your company.

There's a myriad of various types of funnels, making it somewhat misleading to classify it here as one. If you think of the sale of your membership site as selling other products, you're probably on the right path.

Here's a sample funnel that can work for selling the product:

  1. A Video Sales Letter Page
  2. An Offer Page
  3. An Upsell or Downsell Page

Again, these are not the only three ways for selling your membership. They are all common and proven.

Remember, membership websites can be compared to other types of products! Some people won't buy it, certain people may need to return more than once before they are ready. Don't worry about it! But DO make sure you have a funnel or two to make sure that your Ideal Members get through without falling off in confusion.

4. Test and Adapt

The final stage of funnel creation is to adjust. When you are running ads and traffic to a funnel but no one buys this mean your membership site sucks?

The most common answer is no.

It is essential to identify the right audience and the appropriate language to make you Ideal Members excited, the right price (maybe) and much more. Don't quit. Concentrate on improving the sales funnel until you discover ways to improve your sales funnel.

One of the easiest method to achieve this is to conduct an A/B testing - which involves creating two different variations of the same funnel page to see which is more effective.

Conclusion

The end of the day, creating a funnel for a membership site could be an excellent option to create a community. It's important to remember that it'll need some time to make sure the funnel is working properly. And if you do the background work to clarify your ideal customer and the offering, you stand a greater chance the funnel will work.
