Learn about the strategies self-advocacy coach Jessica Wilson uses to sell coaching, share her experience and encourage people to advocate confidently for themselves.

The 17th of July in 2020 Jessica Wilson was diagnosed with stage 3 of inflammation breast cancer. She was only 32 old and did not have a previous history of breast cancer in her family or gene.

"I attend my doctor's appointment to make my first appointment, and I realize that he's a person with the same drive to live my life the way I do," Jessica remembers. "He showed up to my appointment 40 minutes late -- no explanation, no apology."

"Immediately my brain switches to self-protection mode. If you're not able to think about whether I'll survive or die, or if the treatment is at your discretion ... this is when I must make an adjustment. I started speaking up immediately to anyone who would listen -the doctor who recommended me as well as the surgeon who operated on my breasts as well as to everybody else. "Hey it's not working with me.'"

The physician was always pushing to use the standard procedure. "Maybe the condition I'm experiencing is not a standard issue," Jessica thought. "Maybe I need to look outside the box."

After a while, Jessica switched doctors and hospitals until she found a team who listened to her. "I think that, if I had stayed in that hospital, I would not have lived to see today. There is no regret in the least," she says.

The incident prompted an inquiry to Jessica who else might be suffering from this?

"Having gone through this process and observing it, I got the realization: How many people who are in this world accepting these low standards of treatment either because they don't think of a different way, or because they're afraid or aren't sure what's the best way to treat others"

Jessica recognized that there must others out that had similar problems, many of whom might lack the courage or know-how to speak up on their own as she had done.

She wanted to share her experiences and lessons discovered through her own experience:

There's no reason to feel hesitant about taking a treatment or test you're not interested in regardless of whether your doctor says there's nothing else to do.

Inform your physician if you require more time to think about or think about a problem.

Don't be afraid to ask a lot of questions -- however many you'll need to be able to comprehend what your doctor will explain to you.

"I thought about it and was struck by the fact that I've always had to advocate for me," Jessica explains. "When you think about the world at large it's important to be a person of integrity wherever you go."
