We're extremely happy to be part of our 20-year tradition of providing an opportunity for small and emerging businesses all over the world to stand out and succeed. Marcy Lab School Marcy Lab School is an independent non-profit organisation that is located in Brooklyn, New York, which aims to provide students with the best postsecondary learning experiences to help youngsters into fulfilling and meaningful work in the area of technology.
We made this donation of $100,000 to The Marcy Lab School as a part of our 2020 pledge to support organizations working to reduce the gap in racial equality.
We spoke with The Marcy Laboratory School's Executive Director, Reuben Ogbonna II, about how the school is creating avenues for Fellows to develop their skills and pursue jobs in the area of technology, but without getting a degree that lasts for four years.
: Marcy Lab is a very new company, why did you choose to create this non-profit?
Reuben Ogbonna II: After spending 14 years serving students of color--along with my co-founder Maya Bhattacharjee-Marcantonio--in the charter and public school systems, we repeatedly watched as our former students with limitless potential slipped through the cracks of higher education. What isn't talked about in the news about the college experience in the United States is the fact that every year thousands of talented skilled, diligent and gifted students are accepted into the school they've always hoped to attend, yet aren't qualified to afford tuition or remain there until they finish their studies. We were astonished by the abysmal failure rates of "college promises" which left those students, and families an unsustainable debt burden and other insurmountable problems.
We created and run Marcy Lab out of the idea that youth that are of color, as well as the fact that every youngsters should have access to a better and more equitable chance as well as opportunities previously restricted to those who completed the 4-year college. Marcy Lab School Marcy Lab School provides a different option for postsecondary education that is reimagined, and was founded on the notion that it can provide lifelong opportunities in the economy as well as mobility to youngsters who are looking to embark on a life-changing career in technology.
SQSP is considered to be a feasible alternative to the four-year college degree for fellow students. The main reason is why it is essential to be aware that the Marcy Lab offers this path towards a job?
ROThe problems I observed my students experience in real-time were some of the biggest barriers for children who are of different ethnicities. It was clear that the educational system was failing to deliver what colleges claim that young people seek in terms of social interaction, motivation, academic relevance and the capability to be aligned with not only an industry but also an opportunity to be a part of the future. It's the careful combination of these elements that make up the core of Marcy Lab and are some important aspects that help young adults build confidence in their decision to take a different route.
In order to keep our word We ensure that the Fellows are prepared to enter the workforce after their 12 months of training in addition to possessing the necessary skills to integrate their skills to teams that are in high-speed and add value on beginning on. The Fellows develop technical skills through completing an industry-specific, trained curriculum that is adaptable and adaptable to evolving technological requirements. And alongside building a strong technical background, our fellows take part in the Leadership & Development curriculum, which focuses on developing racial identities, gender equity in the development of careers as well as financial literacy. It includes books by famous authors like James Baldwin, Michelle Alexander, Safiya Umoja Noble, and the late Dr. Beverly Tatum.
We're excited to report the news that Marcy Lab School graduates are searching for jobs and securing greater pay, previously limited to students from colleges that have been to the top institutions for four years. The result is double win: We're not only seeing our fellow students and their families pushed into situations of financial stability, but it signals that companies are drastically shifting their hiring methods to be accommodating and attract those who aren't conventional people.
SQSP: Would you be able to tell us more information about the impact that you've observed the impact from Marcy Lab School Marcy Lab School will have on the participants in and following the course?
ROEven after five years working in the field and viewing the results and results, I'm convinced that it's a breakthrough to watch our children get positions that pay an average of $108,000 in annual salary when they are aged between 19 and 20, working for one of the top internationally competitive firms and with no loans. The young workers work alongside teams of companies like The New York Times, JPMorgan, Cockroach Labs, Spotify and many more and increasing their earning at around $75,000 in a single year. They also allow the company to support their communities through the purchase of homes, supporting the employees' families and also helping their families.
However, prior to when our colleagues are able to enter into the workforce, we watch them learn, transform and evolve in their determination to push themselves more than they've been before in their pursuit of goals and gaining the self-confidence to realize the value they bring in every place they go. Each day, they are more enthused and driven to contribute their talents beyond the borders of Marcy and their work environments. Working with their teachers and their classmates that they're continuously updated with the latest information about their abilities, knowledge and skills will allow them the ability to eliminate old system of oppression with their own experiences as well as their knowledge to design tools that promote justice for all as well as changes to the society.
SQSP: What is the role that technology play in the overall success of Marcy Lab? Marcy Lab program and its colleagues, not only as regards to subject matter but as a way of directing the course?
ROOur technology-based curriculum's performance relies on our strong relationship with our employer partners for constant feedback on the Fellows' technical and professional capabilities. Any areas of improvement that need to be addressed immediately go to our team of instructors to make sure the quality of our content is altered in accordance with the evolving requirements for recruitment as well as performance on the job.
The alignment of educational and performance of students is a catalyst for the formation of new alliances with hiring businesses who recognize that these intimate connections could be the basis for better or equal hiring results. Some of the highlights include:
Partnering with established firms in order to eliminate degree requirements for software developers. This is the case with New York Times and . These companies are now hiring our Fellows and others that aren't traditionally employed.
The development of a brand-new Capstone program of study collaboration with J.P. Morgan Chase Asset and Wealth Management which is an authority in the field of data engineering and back-end systems. We have designed the course that we teach in our capstone class in order to fulfill their demands and to prepare our fellows for the constantly growing growth in analytics based on information.
SQSP What do you think about Marcy's vision? Lab School's Future?
ROWhat can I do to be optimistic about Marcy Lab's future Marcy Lab as well as the potential of this space that we're in the change happening in the world of business, with firms shift their attention away from the requirement of qualifications and instead focusing on hiring according to skills, that has opened an opportunity for businesses such as Marcy Lab to even exist.
I am seeing major employers all over the country including IBM and Barclays and partners like those, with an abundance of early-career and mid-career professionals and top managers from the Marcy Lab School, similar to the Stanford pipeline which is utilized for businesses located in that region of the San Francisco Bay Area. As they gain experience and work working for top firms I'm witnessing the graduates eventually depart to establish their own businesses and reap dividends through hiring teams that have the same experiences similar to those they have had.
In the end, I view Marcy Lab as a part of an overall network of pathways for equitable development designed specifically for the purpose of helping propel thousands of students who are successful in schools of color into jobs that break this cycle within the course of one generation.
