When Pooja Bavishi came up with the idea of creating her own business that makes ice creams, Malai was born, she took a clear, personal view. "I came up with Malai as a way of honoring my childhood taste as a the young Indian American in a popular and mainstream way," she says.
"Everyone is familiar with the feeling of eating ice cream in their childhood, which often is related to visiting your local stand to enjoy a tasty dessert or enjoying an ice-cream cup to share with family and friends," Pooja says. This nostalgic infusion can be seen in the streets of Malai through market halls and food markets in the region, freezers inside food stores and even pop-up carts throughout New York City, and an elegant flagship shop in Brooklyn with local as well as nationwide delivery.
