Oct 4, 2022

Find out how the the creator Tamkara Adun built an engaged education community and a product line that teaches the decolonized African language and history.

The moment that Tamkara and her husband along with her young kids left Nigeria into the Netherlands the world changed. The family was immersed into a foreign culture, Tamkara quit her job in HR, and her children began attending a new primary school.

Tamkara was concerned that with their new program, the children were learning history from the European perspective that didn't cover many of Africa's stories, achievements, or civilizations.

She recollects "They knew a few things about African culture However, this was that was told through a colonized narrative which did not mention the importance of their ancestral ancestors. I wanted them not to be so absorbed in the stories of other people that they forgot their own. I wanted them to be well-rounded and also be able to comprehend their African history in a way that was true and true to them."

Eager to fill this gap, Tamkara decided she would instruct them all by herself. She began reading important African authors, conversing with her relatives and digging through online archives. "As I began to teach my students, I realized that there was much I hadn't been taught," she remembers. "In the process of educating my students, I was educating myself."

Tamkara knew that if she or her family members needed this info, then others would as well.

"It was an adventure for me. When I began, I realized there was no turning around. As you learn more, the more you realize there is a lot you do not know. I wanted to keep learning and taking in this fresh information. However, I was also eager to share. Knowledge is a gift. You shouldn't keep it only for yourself."

The belief in this premise prompted Tamkara to start an online business named Odunife  that translates to "Year of Love" in Yoruba in order to create the concept of reciprocity in a group. Many were keen to relive historical events by using an African lens, and the more she shared her knowledge and influenced her students, the more they was able to teach her.

Their contributions and questions, combined with her research resulted in education courses as well as ebooks a children's book , a language school  as well as 1:1 coaching programs that expand the world's understanding of African historical events.

The creation of a community that is collaborative in learning

Community is at the center and soul of Tamkara's venture It all began with an easy Instagram account . Tamkara wanted to record the things she was learning even if it was only visible to a few followers. "It was like an echo," she remembers. "I had put my the content on the internet, but no one was paying attention."

Then, slowly, Tamkara became acquainted with other people fascinated by African culture through a decolonized, africa-centric viewpoint. The more details Tamkara posted she shared, the more followers engaged in a conversation, shared, or tagged their friends. The followers also began sharing their personal knowledge and experiences, creating a reciprocal learning community.

"It's a two-way street that I'm sharing and I'm still studying."

"I write something , and people in the comments can expand upon the idea," she explains. "It's an educational community that helps us gain a better understanding of history and things that have happened in the past."

Tamkara has gained traction by connecting with creators in her niche, guest posting and leading with passion.

In the beginning, Tamkara contacted thought leaders she admired through remarks or directly messages. She told them their posts resonated with her and reshared their content to amplify their voice. The group would regularly go to her website and keep following her in the spirit of reciprocity.

Finally, audience members noticed that she was genuinely passionate about her work. "People will know that you are passionate about your work. This builds trust and loyalty. It was about posting quality material that people would naturally want to share, putting my name in front of more individuals," she explains.

In just two years, her Instagram account increased from 50 followers to 24,000 followers.

Tamkara's community has served as the foundation of her efforts throughout the process. Together, she and her followers have established a constructive feedback loop in which all participants can learn and share their knowledge with each other. With all the knowledge available, Tamkara knew it was the right time to expand her knowledge and launch her first product.

Create a community by bringing together solutions

"I always take note of people. Most of the time, especially on Instagram users will say what they're looking for. If something that we both are looking for isn't readily available I'm forced to come up with an offer."

The author also wrote a kids' book titled Osasu as well as The Great Wall of the Benin Empire . It told the story of African ingenuity she wanted her kids to be able to recall, and she knew other communities would be interested in a book about African cultural heritage.

"It's great to appreciate other histories that belong to different parts of the globe However, African kids must have a grasp of their past as well. It builds self-pride and creates confidence in yourself," she elaborates. "I think every historical event, story, deserves its space in the spotlight."

The language school came next.

"Many people have said that they want to master African languages, especially those of us in the diaspora whose ancestors were taken away by the African Maafa and their languages taken away."

She started leading groups of people in order to teach her mother tongue in a casual learning environment. "Anyone could join on Zoom and attend. It was fun. It was a lot of laughter. I saw that there was a space and some excitement."

So Tamkara joined forces with teachers of languages from around Africa for the purpose of creating an online school for language .

Then, when people approached her with questions with complicated answers, Tamkara created a 1:1 coaching program.

"A number of people send me questions. I'd like to find an effort to reply to each of them. But some require more time thinking, energy as well as research. The coaching packages let us have a full conversation."

Through her work with the communityof supporters, Tamkara constantly identifies the needs of her community and fills them with products that share information, love and love.

: A versatile platform for multi-passionate entrepreneurs

A wide range of interests as well as a constant stream of ideas, Tamkara needed a place to store her ideas. That led her to .

"I wanted a platform that would offer me versatility," Tamkara reflects. "I get up each day with numerous ideas running through my head. I wanted a platform that would allow me to have all my ideas on one platform."

"Having my team on hand whenever I have technical problems eliminates the anxiety and burden of trying to figure everything out myself. It's like they've not just been there for me but partnered in building my company," she shares.

"I'm big on communicating and enjoy having multiple touchpoints to talk to my people. When I'm online, they can chat with me immediately. If I'm not there I'll receive an email notification so I'm able to reach them. It's also possible to send broadcast messages to my entire viewers or to a group of people interested in one of my offerings. It's been a game changer."

The simple answer is that creators require devices that allow them to do the best work. According to Tamkara says, " eliminates the technical anxiety and allows me to concentrate on my artistic activities, which is the thing I excel at. Someone is there to assist and assist me. That is invaluable."

Tamkara's adviceis to get assistance and pursue your goals

In the process of building Odunife, Tamkara learned how crucial it was to have a support system and make bold moves. She advises other creators to follow the same advice.

Concentrate on your strengths and don't go by yourself

Entrepreneurs are often required to have a variety of hats on however Tamkara insists on the fact that no one can accomplish it all on their own. "You can't do everything," Tamkara emphasizes. "Figure out how you can do it most effectively and focus your efforts into it. If you are in areas where you're not so proficient ask others to assist with your work."

Don't wait for things to be perfectly

Are you looking for something to communicate with the world? Tamkara recommends taking the leap and getting to know the process.

"Don't just wait for everything to be perfect, since they'll never be perfect," Tamkara says.

"The process of learning lies through doing. If you have an idea, pursue it. There's no way to know what might result from the idea. It's likely that your original plan will alter over time, and you'll make iterations along the way. But if you wait to be perfect, you'll probably never get started."

Everything Tamkara has learned about being an artist, she acquired from her job. It's a bit daunting starting from scratch But nothing is going to happen until you take that first step .

"A lot of people didn't recognize my vision, however I had that deep conviction that it was something I need to accomplish. More often than not, our intuition knows things we do not necessarily have a physical sense of. If your subconscious is insisting that you perform something, and your soul has been directing you in the direction of something, explore that idea and follow that path."
